Well over 12,000 Georgia children are in foster care at any given time.
Some were abused or neglected. Others came from families who couldn't care for
them due to poverty, illness or crisis. For many, opening presents on Christmas
morning or sorting through a stocking full of Christmas goodies is a luxury
they won't know.
In 2009, the Communities for Children launched the Christmas Stocking Program.
The first year the program was able to provide Christmas stockings for 100 children
in Georgia’s foster care system. In 2010, the program provided 150 stockings,
thanks to the generosity of friends, family and the community.
In 2011, Christmas stockings will be provided to:
- Over 100 children/teens in foster care
- A group of former foster youth who are now mothers
- A recently reunified family formerly involved in the foster care system
Our hope is that these stockings will be that extra little something on Christmas
morning, filled with tiny treasures from nail polish or race cars to the basic
necessities like socks and hair brushes.
Thank you so much for remembering some of Georgia's neediest children. We wish you
the happiest holiday season.
